The Co-op Cash is a debit card.
With the Co-op Cash Card, you can access the funds in your account at any Co-op Bank ATM and perform various transactions e.g. withdrawing money, checking your balance, printing a mini-statement etc.
You can also use the card to pay for several everyday expenses that you would normally use cash for.
These include:
- Shopping at super-markets and other retail outlets
- paying for fuel & utility bills
- Paying hospital Bills
- Offsetting restaurant and hotel expenses
- Paying for newspaper and magazine subscriptions, etc.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING THE CO-OP CASH CARD?
a) The Co-op Cash Card is a debit card.
This means, every time you transact using it, you only utilise the funds you have available in your account. There is no interest charged when you use this card to transact, and the money you spend is debited (subtracted) immediately from your account.
(With a Credit Card on the other hand, you can use more money than you have in your account, and then pay the bank later, with Interest.)
b) It is safer than cash
Having the Co-op Cash Card is as good as having cash on you, only safer because no one can access your funds unless they know your PIN Number.
What is a PIN Number?
Along with your card, a Personal Identification Number (PIN) is issued to you. Punching in the number at an ATM gives you access to your account. The PIN prevents unauthorized persons getting access to your funds, even if they managed to steal your ATM card.
c) It is Convenient
The card fits easily into your wallet or purse, and you don't have to pass by an ATM every time you need money to spend.
d) It's just what you need in an emergency!
When there are sudden, unanticipated expenses to pay for, for instance medical emergencies, the last thing you need to worry about is ready cash. Your Co-op Cash Card is all you need to settle the bill.
PAYING FOR GOODS OR SERVICES
How Does Co-op Cash Work?
Co-op Cash is accepted at any outlet or establishment that displays the Visa Electron sign. When you are ready to pay, present your Co-op Cash Card to the cashier. S/he will swipe the card on a Point of Sale (POS) machine, which will automatically seek approval from Co-op Bank for the transaction.
If there are sufficient funds in your account, the transaction will be approved and the cashier will give you a receipt to sign. Retain a copy of the signed receipt (for reconciliation with your bank statement) and give the original back to the cashier.
If the funds are insufficient, the transaction will be rejected and you will have to return the goods. The cashier will give you back your card, and give you two receipts: the POS Receipt and a Cancellation Receipt. You must retain both. All the transactions that you perform with your card, with details of when and where the card was used will be reflected on your bank statement. You can request a statement at any time, and it is free.
HOW TO KEEP YOUR CO-OP CASH CARD SAFE
1. Never reveal your PIN to ANYONE, even the bank.
2. Never write your PIN on the card, or anything usually kept with/near the card.
3. If you are worried about forgetting your PIN and must write it down, ensure that it is hidden or disguised.
4. Keep your card away from mobile phones or any equipment that has a magnet. The magnetic strip in the card will be affected if exposed to a magnetic field.
5. When using the card to pay for goods or services, make sure the cashier swipes it in your presence. f the transaction has to be cancelled for any reason, ensure that you retain a copy of both the POS receipt, and the Cancellation receipt.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU LOSE YOUR CARD
Notify the bank immediately. Cardholders are given a 24-hour number on which to report the loss/theft of their card.
The bank will promptly place your card on a hot-list. This ensures that the card is destroyed if used. You will then be issued with a new card and given a new PIN. If you find your card after you have reported it lost, do not use it. Report it immediately to the bank and follow instructions.
